About Marco Santos
Marco Santos is a Portuguese / Spanish contemporary figurative painter whose work bridges classical painting and contemporary cultural iconography. Influenced by the old masters, he reinterprets the cultural icons of our time as symbolic figures within a modern mythology.

Drawing inspiration from art history, cinema, comics, and everyday life, his paintings construct a figurative multiverse where fiction and reality intersect. Characters from different cultural universes coexist within classical compositions, domestic settings, or shared symbolic spaces, generating visual narratives that explore identity, collective memory, and cultural continuity.
By merging classical painting with contemporary imagery, Santos transforms familiar icons into timeless figurative artworks rooted in both tradition and the present. His artistic practice is grounded in the study of classical painting and shaped by ongoing engagement with contemporary visual culture.
His work draws from the compositional structures and painterly language of the old masters, using them as a foundation to reinterpret present-day cultural symbols.
Rather than illustrating characters, Santos approaches them as cultural icons that embody the shared narratives, values, and collective imagination of our time. In this context, pop culture becomes a form of modern mythology, where figures from cinema, comics, and television assume a symbolic role comparable to that of saints, gods, or heroes in earlier historical periods.

His work has been exhibited in galleries across Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He was recently selected for the artist directory of the prestigious Beautiful Bizarre Magazine and signed a contract with the company iCanvas for the distribution of limited editions of his works.
In 2024, he was honored with the Medal of Merit in Valença do Minho, Portugal, his hometown.
