When a Digital Fix Becomes the Story

When Josh Whedon was brought in for additional filming on Justice League, Henry Cavill returned for reshoots while still working on Mission: Impossible and unable to shave his moustache. Its digital removal became one of the film’s most talked-about visual effects. In Moustache of Justice, the artist appears inside the scene, covering the portrait’s moustache by hand and turning a famous production mishap into the subject of the painting.

Part of Pop Icons in Everyday Life, the work looks at how film culture enters real life through behind-the-scenes stories, fan conversations and images that become impossible to forget. Here, a small technical fix becomes a shared pop-culture memory.
