Pop Art and Shared Universes
Pop Symbiosis
Exploring the symbiosis between modern myths and entertainment conglomerates
The Concept: Biology and Visual Culture
Pop Symbiosis is a series of contemporary pop art paintings created by the artist Marco Santos. In this collection, the author presents a visual proposal based on the physical hybridization of iconic characters from major entertainment universes.
The narrative axis of this series arises from a parallel with the natural world. In biology, symbiosis is a close relationship between two different organisms in which one or both benefit. Marco Santos transfers this premise to the canvas, where the “organisms” are the modern myths of cinema, animation, and comics.
In these works, symbiosis is not only conceptual but anatomical: through unexpected physical fusions —where a superhero’s body merges with an animated character’s face, or the essence of a princess blends with the anatomy of a dweller of the deep— the artist materializes the reality of the constant mergers and acquisitions within the entertainment industry.
A Corporate Ecosystem on Canvas
By visually uniting characters that now belong to the same companies, Santos creates a new visual order of pop culture. What were once independent worlds now coexist in a single body, blurring the boundaries of original identity and questioning the nature of intellectual property in the global era.
Metaphor of the Visual Present
Pop Symbiosis is more than an aesthetic exercise; it is a transformation of current myths. It represents a meeting point between nostalgia and contemporary corporate architecture, inviting the viewer into a context where pop art becomes the mirror of a cultural ecosystem in constant mutation.
