A Literary Crossover

Inspired by Eça de Queiroz’s novel O Mandarim, Tocaras tu a campainha? brings the Portuguese writer’s enigmatic figure into a crossover with the comic-book villain of the same name. The painting imagines a meeting between literary satire and contemporary pop culture, where a simple question opens the door to ambition, temptation and consequence.

Part of Pop Icons in Everyday Life, the work explores how familiar characters and stories move between real life, literature and popular culture. Here, a nineteenth-century Portuguese novel meets a modern screen icon, creating a playful conversation across time and media.
